Types of essays – A guide to writing a supportive essay
An essay can be defined as the writing piece that expresses the author’s viewpoint. However the term is usually so vague that it is ambiguous and overlapping with definitions of essays, reports newspapers, books, short stories, and even books that are virtually unusable. Essays are typically divided into informal and formal in modern times. Formal essays adhere to the standard format that is an approximate similar arrangement of ideas in text. When writing an essay the most important thing is to keep it interesting for the reader. The writer should not get bogged down by how long it takes to write it. Like any other writing, essays are typically written in small portions to achieve the desired results. However when the essay isn’t engaging enough to read, the entire idea behind the essay will be lost. In general, essays can be classified into two kinds: argumentative and descriptive. In addition, the maps for essays can also include visual aids, such as graphs, charts, and illustrations.
Postmodern essayists are famous for their playful approach to writing often referring to the reader as “a clown who laughed at my mistakes.” The essay is an argument, but it does not necessarily mean that the conclusion is right. For example, in “The Wounded Healer” by Joseph Campbell, the last paragraph of the essay reads, “Where I stand now I am wounded however, I don’t think I’m wounded; because I know I’m a man.” What is often viewed by modernists as paradoxically is that there is an opportunity for the writer to criticize the world while at the simultaneously acknowledging that he/she is changing through the journey of the essay.
The thesis statement is the most important element of every essay. The thesis statement should be the foundation of the entire essay. The thesis statement should reiterate the primary idea of the essay, the main subject, with as much clarity and detail as possible. But, it should be written in a manner that does not challenge the arguments made in the body of the essay and instead bolsters those views. The thesis will also decide whether the essay will be given any prizes.
